Philadelphus & Lathyrus

In the Old Garden at the moment an outstanding combination of Mock Orange and Everlasting Sweet Pea is currently in flower. The sweetly-scented Philadelphus provides a climbing frame for the Lathyrus, which is perennial and dies back each year. It lacks the romantic scent of other Sweet Peas but obviously in this instance, that is neither here nor there!

Never managed to get a Philadelphus to flower until this year when Belle Etoile had lots of blossoms. Galling that that was bought from a shop and the other two grown from cuttings never seem to do anything.

I spied the everlasting pea in a friend's garden. I'm going along with my spade. What a colour!

It must be so pleasant to walk along and see and smell these wonderful flowers. As always, your photography is second to none, Bertie.

A wonderful combination! Thanks for posting it! I bet the bees are loving it too.

Seeing those two together is inspirational, must try it out. Everlasting pea is a super dark colour set off so beautifully by the white of the Philadelphus.

What ho, Bertie! My grandmother used to have Sweet Pea climbing over everything in her garden. The scent was heady, but now it reminds me of her whenever I get a whiff of it. Hope you're enjoying your Summer! How are the "crowds" this year at Hidcote?

A beautiful association, and what a lovely colouring on the sweet pea.

I think the Everlasting Sweet-pea does not seed often, but readily creeps around with new shoots from the base... so if a friend is growing it then definitely get yourself around there with a spade!

Michael there has certainly been crowds to speak of since the programme was broadcast, but quiet moments can still be enjoyed. People seem to be arriving early in a bid to beat the mayhem, but of course so many have the same idea that they all combine to create the rush they got out of bed early to avoid.
