One of the best elements of college life is tootling off on garden visits to places you probably might not have visited otherwise. Hardwick Hall is one such place, which we visited several weeks ago. The property was built by Bess of Hardwick, who married four times but (un)fortunately outlived all of her husbands. She was arguably unlucky in love but one guide commented that she simply wore them all down! Either way the upshot all this widowhood was a vast personal wealth, which she put to good use by building Hardwick Hall and also nearby Chatsworth House.
